A decision regarding Pike Industries’ property rights is finally expected to come from the Zoning Board next week, after several rounds of testimony from all parties involved.

The Zoning Board will meet on Wednesday to decide whether to uphold or overturn Code Enforcement Officer Rick Gouzie’s decision to allow Pike to continue operating its quarry on Spring Street, but not to allow rock-crushing, concrete or asphalt plants to be built on the site.

Gouzie’s decision was appealed by both Pike and Westbrook Works, a group of neighboring businesses and residents opposed to Pike’s proposed expansion.

Meanwhile, a proposal from Mayor Bruce Chuluda to rezone the land around Pike’s property and Five Star Industrial Park, from industrial to light manufacturing, is being discussed by the Planning Board.

The city has been working to resolve the dispute, which has pit two of its largest taxpayers, Pike and Idexx, which is a leading member of Westbrook Works, against each other for more than a year now.

Regardless of the outcome of the Zoning Board vote, the resolution could still be years away, if either – or both – of the deep-pocketed parties decides to challenge its decision in court.

Pike has already filed a lawsuit against the city for its attempt to rezone its property.

The Zoning Board meeting is Wednesday, June 10, at 7 p.m. in Room 114 at Westbrook High School. If the board does not reach a decision Wednesday, another meeting will be held on June 24.
