Buxton voters Tuesday chose Peter Burns, 63, to serve a three-year term as selectman.

Burns defeated Carol Sanborn, 70, who formerly served on the board, by a wide margin, 338-183. Burns won the seat of Cliff Emery, who did not seek re-election, on the five-member Board of Selectmen. Burns has previously served as chairman and longtime member of the Budget Committee.

Voters also approved a charter commission, 285-220. The commission is a step toward a proposal to change the town’s charter to allow adding a town manager position.

Town Clerk John Myers reported that voters cast 544 ballots, including 68 absentee. Myers said the turnout represented 8.67 percent of the town’s 6,271 registered voters.

Voters also filled several positions in uncontested races:

Elected to the charter commission were Jennifer A. Barschdorf, Lawrence A. Miller, May M. Schumacher, Dianne M. Senechal (selectmen’s assistant), Dennis B. Sweatt and Andrew J. Townsend.
