Outside of Raymond Village Library nows sits a memorial to a local man, lost too young, whose generosity and good nature left a lasting impression.

A stone bench bearing the inscription “In Memory of Scott Libby” has been placed on the small lawn outside the library in honor of the 25-year-old Raymond man, who was found dead along a railroad track in Bethel early in the morning of Feb. 20.

His death has been ruled a homicide, and 23-year-old Agostino Samson of Bethel and Windham, a former employee of Libby’s, has been charged with the murder. Samson pleaded not guilty to murder May 15 in Oxford County Superior Court.

Libby, owner of a greenhouse and landscaping company, donated plants each year to a fundraising sale held by the Library, located on Route 121. The bench was installed as a way for those who support the library to show how much Libby meant to them, said Susan Rehm, who was part of the effort.

“Scott had worked with the library, donating plants for the plant sale. He was very, very helpful with that. He was a terrific guy,” said Rehm.

The idea to honor Libby got its start at his funeral in February, Rehm said. A group of people who knew Scott through the Library and his other work in the community wanted to do something to remember a man who was always smiling, always willing to help, she said.

“It’s just a few of us who participate with the Library. We thought we’d do something to honor Scott,” she said. “It’s all about Scott and what he did. He was a great guy who met an untimely end.”

The bench was placed just outside the Library wall, so people sitting there can take advantage of the Library’s wireless Internet service while enjoying the outdoors. It sits near flower pots.

Libby’s legacy will live on separately from the bench, Rehm said. Libby’s mother has told the library that her son’s contribution to the annual fundraiser will go on, at least for this year.

“She said there were still some plants coming for the plant sale,” Rehm said.
