The Gorham Planning Board voted Monday to grant Shaw Brothers Construction approval for the first phase of redevelopment of a former brick factory site.
The board voted 4-0, with Chairwoman Susan Robie, Tom Fickett and Tom Hughes absent, to OK the first phase of work at the site at 329 Mosher Road.
The Gorham construction concern will demolish the former LaChance Brickyard buildings and prepare an 11-acre site for the company’s home office complex. The property is zoned industrial and borders the site where the town in 2008 approved Shaw Brothers’ plans for an asphalt plant and quarry.
Jon Shaw, co-owner and president of the firm, said following this week’s Planning Board meeting that the first step preceding demolition would be to notify utilities Tuesday to disconnect services at the vacant brickyard buildings.
“We’ll start right off quick,” Shaw said about the demolition and site cleanup.
Unlike a lengthy series of contentious public hearings on the asphalt plant and quarry, no one opposed Shaw Brothers plans this week. One resident, Dave Kent of Grant Road, favored it.
“I would strongly urge final approval of this project this evening,” said Kent, who pointed to the taxes the company provides the town.
Shaw expected demolition and the site work to employ up to 15 workers. He said company officials also planned to meet with an architect this week. Buildings would include an office, a large maintenance shop, storage building, and a building to house equipment. The company would have to return to the Planning Board to gain approval for any building plans.
He said the company has toured facilities in Massachusetts, upstate New York and on the West Coast to get ideas for its Maine facility.
“It’ll be state-of-the-art,” Shaw said about the proposed complex, which will be served by public water, sewer and natural gas.
The project will cost “several million,” Shaw said.
The construction company office is now on Main Street in Gorham.
