Baseball

Coach: Chuck Nadeau

Last year’s record: 4-12

Key players: Sean Grandmaison (Senior, 1B-.418BA last season), Jon Foster (Senior, P), Ryan Luxton (Senior, P), Brendon Joyce (Junior, C) .289 BA, Steve Broy (Junior, SS-.275 BA)

Season outlook: “We will be more athletic this year, but we need to see significant improvement in almost all aspects of the game to challenge for a playoff spot in a league that looks to be deep in competitive teams this year,” Nadeau said. “As always, pitching will be a big key to how much we can improve over last year. We will have a staff that is potentially deep, but lacking in experience. We will be looking for those 2-3 guys who are ready to establish themselves as consistent pitchers in our league.”

“Defense will need to be a strength for us this season,” the coach continued. “We have experienced players back at key positions (Joyce, C) (Broy, SS) (Grandmaison, 1B). A key priority in the preseason will be finding a centerfielder to replace an all-defensive first team selection lost to graduation. “

“Offensively I expect to be much improved over a year ago, Nadeau said. “We will consistently put eight positional players on the field who will put the ball in play and use their athletic ability to pressure the opponent’s defense. I think the kids are committed to making the improvements we need to make to reestablish our program as a factor in the Telegram League. I am excited to see how they respond to the challenge.”

Season outlook: “We’ll have a lot of experienced players at the offensive end of the field,” Bell said. “The top two scorers from 2009 return. Overall, seven of the top 10 scorers from last season are back. Our midfield unit is very athletic, which should give us favorable matchups on both offense and defense and help us clear the ball. We lost last year’s entire starting defensive unit to graduation. Though all of our defensive personnel are relatively inexperienced at the varsity level they have shown so far in preseason that they are willing to work hard. We’re confident their maturity will make up for their lack of experience. We should be a high scoring team, but ultimately we’ll go as far as our defense takes us. Our goal is to earn one of the six playoff spots in Western Maine Class A.”
