BUXTON – In a record June turnout, Buxton voters Tuesday elected former Selectman Cliff Emery and Dianne Senechal, the retired selectmen’s assistant, to three-year terms as selectmen in a six-candidate race.
Incumbents Daniel Collomy and Linda Pulsoni lost their seats on the board.
Buxton Town Clerk John Myers reported that 1,957 ballots were cast in local and state balloting, representing a 31-percent Buxton voter turnout. Myers said the turnout eclipsed the previous decade high of 1,374 in 2002 in Buxton for a June election. Last June, 544 ballots were cast in Buxton.
Emery topped the balloting for selectmen with 717 and Senechal tallied 685. They were followed by Collomy with 604; Pulsoni, 553; Dennis Santolucito, 502; and Cyrus McCall, 194.
In a local referendum, voters agreed 836 to 367 to change the tax collector position from elected to appointed.
The town’s 1,600 printed local ballots were depleted shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday and additional ballots had to be supplied.
The polls were in Buxton Town Hall, which was impacted by sporadic telephone service. To make matters worse, town hall also lost its water supply. “It’s been a very challenging day,” Myers said.
