Home-brew competition

Sign-ups are being accepted through Friday for home brewers who wish to participate in the Fifth annual New England Regional Homebrew Competition set for Oct. 23 in Manchester, N.H.

Dinners with Doctors series

Southern Maine Medical Center has begun a new round of its Dinners With Doctors educational series.

A talk on breast health will be Thursday, followed by a session on sleep study labs Oct. 12, osteopathy Oct. 21 and seasonal affective disorder Oct. 28.

All sessions meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the hospital. The $5 fee includes a light dinner. Pre-registration is required by calling 283-7272.

USO-style veterans show

The Fourth annual G.I. Dame’s USO (style) Show to honor veterans will be held 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 23 at the American Legion Hall on Route 109.

Domestic violence vigil

Caring Unlimited will host it’s 22nd annual Candlelight Vigil and Speak Out at 6 p.m. today in Central Park to support survivors and honor those whose lives were lost due to domestic violence.

Fall dance at Nasson

Nasson Community Center Gymnasium at 457R Main St., will host a fall foliage dance from 8 to 11:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Coastal Quilters will host Rhea Daiute of Alewives Fabrics for its 10 a.m. meeting on Saturday at the Lions Club on Lions Lane. Daiute will demonstrate how to make laminated totes.

Veterans Home open house

A 15th anniversary open house at the Maine Veterans Home, 477 High St., from 2-5 p.m. Friday will include the dedication of the Gold Star Mother’s Monument for mothers who have lost a son or daughter in the military.

Talk on terrorist intelligence

The Maine Chapter of the Association for Intelligence Officers will host Israeli Col. (Ret.) Jonathan Fighel at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Community House at 8 Temple St.

Fighel has expertise in various terrorist organizations from around the world and has served in various operational intelligence gathering posts and command positions on the West Bank, including governor of Ramallah, Jenin and Tul-Karm.
