WESTBROOK — A Westbrook man was killed this afternoon while attempting to cut down a tree on County Road.

Westbrook Police Chief Bill Baker identified the victim as 55-year-old John Larson of Bridge Street in Westbrook.

Baker said Larson was using a chainsaw to cut down a 40-foot-tall white birch tree when the base of the tree snapped and hit him in the head. Larson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tree was located on Larson’s family property at 740 County Road. The accident was reported around 1:50 p.m.
