ORONO – Terrance Mitchell hit a pair of 3-pointers during an opening 25-6 run, and the University of Maine extended its winning streak to five games Saturday night with a 70-59 men’s basketball win over Stony Brook.

Raheem Singleton also had six points during Maine’s big run, and five other Black Bears contributed to the outburst for the America East leaders. Maine trailed 4-3 early before Murphy Burnatowski’s 3-pointer started a 22-2 surge.

Stony Brook (7-12, 2-5 America East) eventually closed to within 42-37 early in the second half, but Maine countered with a 15-6 run. A 3-pointer by Gerald McLemore made it 65-47 with four minutes left.

Troy Barnies finished with 17 points to pace the Black Bears (12-7, 6-1). McLemore scored 15 points, Mitchell had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Singleton added 12 points, seven assists and three steals.

Stony Brook was led by Leonard Hayes with 22 points and seven rebounds.
