Reggae festival benefits Winter Cache Project
A line-up of reggae bands and DJs will hit the stage this Saturday in a benefit performance for the Winter Cache Project. The show will start at 9 p.m. at Port City Music Hall and feature music from Mighty Mystic & The Thunder Band, Royal Hammer, Fitzie Niceness & Soul Union and DJs Lukaduke and Queen B. Music will include contemporary reggae, classic roots and dancehall favorites.
Proceeds from the festival will go to the Winter Cache Project, a Cumberland-based organization that works to free local people from industrial agriculture and build community food security. In the summer, Winter Cache volunteers tend a large garden and then store and preserve the produce for distribution to members throughout the winter.
General admission tickets to the show cost $10 and VIP tickets cost $25 at Bull Moose Music stores or at www.portcitymusichall.com.

Nonprofit forms to push for community gardens
A new nonprofit group has formed to advocate for the creation of organic, community gardens in the city. The Community Garden Collective made a presentation at the South Portland City Council workshop on Monday night.
The group wants to create a community garden on a plot of land behind the Hamlin School on the corner of Sawyer Street and Ocean Avenue. The goal is to be able to rent out gardening spaces for planting in the spring of 2012.
