WALES — An upcoming vote on whether to close a Maine school may be influenced by a series of burst water pipes at the school in recent days.
A pipe burst Jan. 25 at the Wales Central School. Less than a week later, a second pipe burst. Some ceiling tiles were soaked, as was a carpet. There were more pipe problems Friday, affecting at least three rooms.
On Tuesday, voters will be asked whether they favor allowing the closing of the school, which is attended by 60 children from kindergarten through third grade.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reports the cost of keeping the school open for 2011-2012 has been estimated at about $208,000.
