GRAY — Water tests at Wilkies Beach on Crystal Lake show the bacterial levels are safe and the beach has been reopened, town officials said today.

High levels of E. coli bacteria led town officials to close Wilkies Beach Wednesday. Tests done Monday showed that E. coli levels exceeded healthy standards, said Recreation Director Dean Bennett.

The most likely culprit was a large flock of geese that has made the pond home, he said. Residents in the area counted 400 geese coming in at dusk after eating in nearby fields, he said.

The results of tests taken Thursday were received today and showed that the bacteria levels had dropped back down to acceptable levels. The beach will be open for the weekend, with results from tests done today available on Monday.
