AUGUSTA — The two-party commission that’s redrawing Maine’s congressional district lines to balance population is taking a step toward completing its work.
The 15-member commission meets today in the State House, and proposals for redrawing the boundaries of Maine’s two congressional districts may be presented.
The panel has six weeks to finish its work because Gov. Paul LePage has called a special legislative session for lawmakers to vote on a redistricting plan. The session will be held Sept. 27.
Federal courts have ruled that Maine’s congressional districts are unconstitutional based on 2010 census data and must be redrawn before the 2012 congressional elections.
Several other states, including Georgia, Maryland, Rhode Island, South Dakota and North Dakota, also have special sessions scheduled to take up redistricting. Georgia’s is today .
