80th birthday benefits museum

Recently the family of Ruth Bridges Ayers of Gorham came up with an unusual way to celebrate her 80th birthday.

By secretly using her email addresses, they invited her friends and relatives to make “80s” donations to 19th Century Willowbrook Village in Newfield, a museum struggling to stay open – 80 cents, $8, or $80. About 60 donations raised about $3,700 for the museum.

Ham radio license class, exam

Tim Watson of Gorham has announced that the Wireless Society of Southern Maine will be hosting a one-day class that is designed to help anyone who is interested to obtain their first amateur radio license.

The class will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Wassamki Springs Campground in Scarborough and will cost $35. The price includes all the necessary materials and a lunch. Pre-registration is required.

The class, which will prepare students to take the FCC technician class exam will cover basic electronics, including components, radio signals and propagation, radio equipment, FCC rules, and electrical and RF safety. Afterwards there will be an exam session.

Frank Krizan, who has taught several ham radio license courses in the past, describes the class as being like an interactive study hall where students receive instruction and can ask questions about any area they’re concerned with. “In a recent class of 38,” Krizan said, “we had a 98 percent pass rate.”

Those interested in taking the class should pre-register before Sept. 9 online at www.qsl.net/ws1sm/getlicensed.html, or contact Watson by email at [email protected], or by phone at 839-0402.
