BATH — A Brunswick man was arrested Sunday night and charged with leading police on a chase through Bath in a stolen truck.

Police Chief Michael Field said officers apprehended Matthew S. Gaspar, 23, after a Sagadahoc County deputy spotted a truck traveling at a high rate of speed across the Sagadahoc Bridge from Woolwich to Bath shortly after 9 p.m.

Several Bath police officers attempted to locate the truck, which was subsequently spotted leaving the parking lot of the Bath Shopping Center at a high rate of speed.

The driver abandoned the truck on Central Avenue. Police used a dog to track him, and Gaspar was taken into custody at a Central Avenue apartment.

He was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving to endanger, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, then was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

He is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Oct. 4.
