AUGUSTA – A Brunswick team in contention for the Pine Tree Conference football title put a damper on Cony’s homecoming Friday night with a big first half.

The Dragons rolled up 35 points in the first two quarters en route to a 35-7 victory.

Brunswick (4-1) is a point away from being unbeaten and has used its 21-20 season-opening loss to Bangor as motivation.

“We look back on it every day at practice,” senior running back and linebacker Keith Kitchens said. “We learn from our mistakes and get better every day. We had six turnovers in that game, and that really stopped us.”

Kitchens rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on seven carries and was among several contributors for Brunswick. Jordan Rysdham gained 84 yards on six carries and scored a touchdown, while Pablo Maderal and Jason Carter also rushed for touchdowns.

“We’ve got a lot of skill guys,” Brunswick Coach Dan Cooper said. “It’s tough to get them all the ball.”

The Dragons finished with 360 yards, including 277 on the ground. They held the Rams to minus-27 yards rushing with three sacks factored in, although Cony quarterback Ben Lucas did complete 13 of 24 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.

“He made a couple of mistakes tonight, and I know he’s going to do that,” Cony Coach Robby Vachon said of Lucas. “But he made some good throws also.”

Lucas threw three interceptions, including one to Jared Jensen who returned it 90 yards for a touchdown. The Rams trailed 7-0 at the time and were moving the ball well.

“I think that took the wind right out of their sails,” Cooper said.

The Rams showed improvement in the second half and scored on their opening drive, as Lucas hit Chase Shostak behind two defenders at the 5, and Shostak dived in for the touchdown.

Shostak caught two passes for 65 yards, and his younger brother, Chandler, made six grabs for 56 yards.
