BRUNSWICK — Russell G. Bernier, 92, of Riverview Drive in Brunswick, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at the Mid Coast Senior Center. He was born on April 28, 1919 in Brunswick the son of Joseph and Alberinte ( Fortin) Bernier and grew up in Brunswick graduating from Brunswick High School class of 1937, where he was a member of the traveling ice hockey team and were state champs for 2 straight years.

Russell worked at a local gas station on Maine Street in Brunswick and the Varney Mill for a few years before making his career move to join the United States Air Force in 1942. Also in 1942, before being deployed, he met his soul mate, Anita Tute, the woman he knew he would spend his life together with. “Wait for me” he said and on October 6, 1945 the couple was married and made their home in Brunswick.

Russell was employed at Cushman Delivery, retiring in the mid 80’s, and in the 90’s went back to work for Cottle’s Supermarkets retiring many years later

Russell was a family man, it was something that was very important to him, there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for them. He was an avid sports fan, ice hockey, being his favorite. The Bruins was the team of choice for him. The Red Sox was another team of his, as well as the Patriots. If there was a game on, he was watching, until his team was on the losing end; then off went the tube.

Russell was a kind man with a big heart for everyone he met. He will be sadly missed.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Anita Bernier who passed in 2005, his daughter, Melita Bernier who passed in 1984, and a sister, Muriell Roy who passed in 2002.
