GORHAM – The Gorham boys track team was a close second to powerful Scarborough at a Jan. 21 meet at USM in Gorham.

It was a close fight for the top overall spot in the team standings in the boys meet, with Scarborough edging out Gorham for a 175-135 victory. South Portland placed third with 77 points, Biddeford was fourth with 40 points and Massabesic placed fifth with 29.

The Scarborough girls won the team competition in typically dominant fashion, running away from the rest of the field with 173 points. South Portland was second with 130.5, Gorham was third with 98, Biddeford was fourth with 54.5 and Massabesic was fifth with 44.

On the boys side, the Rams got big wins from Austin Bell, who took the top spot in the junior 400-meter dash with a time of 52.68. Jon Gray also got a win for Gorham in the junior 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.19.

While Gorham’s Travis Grant just missed out on a win in the junior 55-meter hurdles, finishing second to Scarborough’s Cameron Langlois, 8.34-8.67, he redeemed himself in the junior high jump, this time besting Langlois, 5-2 to five feet even.

In the senior 200-meter dash, it was Gorham’s Ryan Baillargeon in the top spot with a time of 23.96. Gorham’s Nathan Bucknell won the senior 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 52.72. Brandon Cushman won the open 600-yard dash for the Rams in 1:18.13 and Julian Nijkamp won the senior 55-meter hurdles in 8.52.

On the girls side, Gorham’s top performer at the meet was easily Sarah Perkins, as she captured wins in three separate events. Perkins won the senior 200-meter dash in 26.04, the senior 400-meter dash in 1:00.45 and the senior high jump in a close battle with teammate Lindsay Chapman, 4-10-4-6.

Hannah Southard also got a win for the Rams, taking the junior triple jump with a distance of 31-8.75.

Scots, Blue Blazes run strong

While they didn’t win the meet against Thornton Academy, McAuley and Portland at USM on Jan. 21, members of the Westbrook and Bonny Eagle boys and girls indoor track teams had some solid performances.

Westbrook got a win in the girls junior 55-meter dash from Brittney Arsenault as she crossed the line in 7.99 seconds. It was Bonny Eagle’s Audrey Weyand who took first place in the junior 200-meter dash in 27.88 seconds, just ahead of Thornton’s Tori Daigle, who finished in 27.92. Weyand also won the open 600-yard dash with a time of 1:35.03.

The Scots also got a win in the senior 800-meter run, as Alexandra Vayda finished with a top time of 2:33.02, and Sierra Cooper won the pole vault with a top height of eight feet.

On the boys side, the Scots’ James Patchell won the junior 200-meter dash in 24.89, he also finished a close second to Thornton’s Andrew Smith in the junior 400-meter dash, 54.26-54.75.

Bonny Eagle’s Davey Swan win the senior 55-meter dash in seven seconds flat, just .03 ahead of runner-up Terrence Yuen of Thornton, who finished in 7.03. The Scot boys also got a win from Jeremy Collins in the senior 200-meter dash as he bested Thornton’s Kyle Forbes, 24.46-24.67. Collins also won the senior 400-meter dash in 53.40.

Bonny Eagle also got wins from Kyle Bailey, who win the senior 55-meter hurdles in 8.27 and Connor Dearborn, who won the pole vault with a top height of 10-6.

Westbrook dominated the senior 800-meter run, taking the top three places. Fred Thompson won the race in 2:10.49, while teammate Nasareldin Zackaria was second in 2:11.32, followed closely by teammate James Wheatley, who finished third with a time of 2:11.83.

The Blue Blazes also got a win in the senior high jump, as Magnes Lewis cleared the bar at 5-8. Lewis finished second to Thornton’s Cam Trask in the senior triple jump, 38-1.25-37-3.5. Westbrook’s Jonathan Murray blew away the field in the one-mile run, winning in 5:08.28, well ahead of runner up Gabe Letourneau of Thornton, who finished in 5:27.09.
