BRUNSWICK

This weekend will feature New England Interscholastic competition in swimming, wrestling and indoor track.

The 48th annual New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Providence Career and Technical Center in Providence, R.I.

Jared Jensen of Brunswick High School headlines this Maine group with a 47- 0 MPA record and top Maine seed at 152. His overall season record is 49-2. He lost to Chris Lash of Colchester, Vt., twice.

“For some reason Lash did not compete in the Vermont state tournament and will not be at New Englands,” said Mt. Ararat coach Erick Jensen, Jared’s father. “Practice has been good, we have been working some with Bemnet Banks of Hyde, who was just named All-American for prep schools, Skowhegan, and for several days we have been traveling to Marshwood. Jared has also been working out with Dan DelGallo from Gardner, so we have pieced together a very good two-week schedule.

“ Jared is certainly capable of placing at New Englands. His style matches what he will see down there and he is wrestling really well right now, so we will see.”

The other lone Mid-coast region entrant is Lisbon’s Zach Stevens (30- 9), a third seed at 120.

Thirty years ago in Biddeford, Zach’s father and coach, Mark, won the 126-pound title for Lisbon.

“He’s pretty pumped and will be wrestling the Massachusett’s number six kid, although we don’’t know anything about him,” said Mark Stevens, “Zach’s been wrestling with (teammate) Tyler Bard and the middle school program.

“Realistically, if he could get one or two wins and place in the top six that would be great for him as a sophomore.”

Top seeds from Maine include Tyler Craig of Mt. Blue at 106, Connor Sheehan of Fryeburg Academy at 113, Iain Whitis of Cheverus at 120, Ethan Gilman of Massabesic at 126, Brent Waterman of Belfast at 132, Dan DelGallo of Gardiner at 138, Nick Janes of Marshwood at 145, Jensen at 152, Graham Strondak of Westbrook at 160, Caleb Farrington of Mt. Blue at 170, Anthony Batty of Camden Hills at 182, Christopher Powell of Bucksport at 195, Rhett Chase of Camden Hills at 220 and Marcus Eaton of Brewer at 285.

Relay teams were based on the results of state competition with the champion of each class and the next three fastest relay teams. Each state may have five entries and the fastest alternate from the three states will be entered.

Admission fee will be $ 10 for adults and students with children under school age free.

The meet starts at 11:30 a.m. and the order of events is 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 15 minute break for warm- up, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.

“Yeah, we didn’t have a very good time when we went to the New Englands before,” said head coach Todd Marco. “ It wasn’t much a team event, mostly individual. Plus, we have some swimmers who are going to compete in Orono (University of Maine) for the YMCA Championships. They’re focused on that.”

The 25th annual New England Interscholastic Boys’ and Girls’ Indoor Track and Field Championships are scheduled for Friday in Roxbury, Mass., at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center, Roxbury Community College.
