IOWA CITY, Iowa — With James Wells of Phippsburg playing a big part, Indiana University placed third in the 2012 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center over the weekend.

The Hoosiers missed out on a second-place finish by just 3.5 points, finishing with 549 to Ohio State’s 552.5. Michigan took home its secondstraight Big Ten title with 738.5 points.

On Saturday, the final day, Wells followed up a win the day before in the 100 backstroke with a fifth-place finish in the 200 back. After putting up a career time of 1:42.92 in prelims (a five-second drop for a personal- best), Wells went 1:43.83 in the championship final.

On day one, Indiana had fourth-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay to sit in third place.

The Hoosiers opened the meet with a fourth in the 200 medley relay as Wells, Cody Miller, Steve Schmuhl and Daniel Kanorr clocked a time of 1:25.79.

On day two, Wells posted a 50 freestyle time of 20.69, putting him 48th in the field.

On the third day during the prelims, Wells qualified second in the 100 backstroke for the championship with a 46.51 ( NCAA B cut). That night, Wells won the event with a 46.30, a career-best and NCAA B cut time.

The NCAA Championships are set for March 22-24 in Federal Way, Wash.
