WESTBROOK – Westbrook High School’s Drama Club and jazz musicians both received honors during the past couple of weeks in state and regional festivals and performances, according to organizers for both clubs.

The drama club took top honors at the Class A Regional Drama Festival held at Marshwood High School on March 9-10, according to Rick Solomon, the club’s director.

The club beat out three other schools in its class, and will now move on to the state festival, going on this weekend in Falmouth.

“We’re really looking forward to the state festival,” Solomon said.

The students are performing “Killing Bill,” by Alan Haehnel, a farcical piece lampooning the works of William Shakespeare.

Meanwhile, the jazz students received honors at the Maine State High School Jazz Festival at Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor this past weekend.

“It was a long weekend in Bar Harbor, but a good one,” said Phil Rich, the school’s music director.

Rich said 47 high school musicians formed into six separate groups in the competition. In all, Westbrook took five different awards, including first place in Division B Combos, second place in Division 2 Combos, second place in Division 2 Jazz Bands, third place in Division A Combos, and third place in the Multiple Jazz Band Division competition.

Receiving individual Outstanding Musicianship Awards during the festival were Elliott Gagnon, trumpet; Andrew Lamson, trumpet; Eric Little, electric bass; Demonte Luter, tenor sax; Emily Rich, acoustic bass; Gabrielle Latini, voice; and Aidan Rodier, English horn.
