After a few, brief days of summer-like weather, chillier times have returned. But a few snowflakes notwithstanding, the sunny season is right around the corner.

With that in mind, Current Publishing is presenting a snapshot look at some of the area’s public golf courses:

Rivermeadow Golf Club

9 holes

216 Lincoln St., Westbrook


Green fees: $15 for nine holes. $24 for 18. Ten-play cards are available at a discount. Cart rental (per person) is $8 for nine holes and $12 for 18.

Overview: Sitting on 70 acres, the course has a combination of par 3s and 4s with two par 5s featuring varying degrees of difficulties.

Twin Falls Golf Club

9 holes

364 Spring St., Westbrook


Green fees: $15 for 9 holes ($20 with cart) and $20 for 18 holes ($25 with cart on weekdays and $30 on weekends)

Overview: The course offers seven par 4s and two par 3s. Its hilly terrain and doglegs provide a challenge. Tee times are not offered over the phone; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gorham Country Club

18 holes

93 McLellan Road, Gorham


Green fees: For adults, prices start at $20 for nine holes and $30 for 18. Family deals, weekday and weekend rates, twilight specials and multi-passes are available. Check the website for details. Cart rental (per person) is $11 for nine holes and $16 for 18.

Overview: The course covers 180 acres of state game preserve and features generous fairways and soft greens.

Nonesuch River Golf Club

18 holes

304 Gorham Road, Scarborough


Green fees: According to the club’s website, rates start at $36 on weekends and $32 on weekdays through June 14. Rates increase to $40 on weekends and $36 on weekdays after June 14. Carts start at $12 for 9 holes and $18 for 18 holes.

Overview: Nonesuch River Golf Club features an 18-hole 6,300-yard, par 70 course designed by Tom Walker of Golf Design Studios in Palm Beach, Fla.

In addition to the course, Nonesuch features a 2,500 square-foot clubhouse, a practice range, two putting greens and a golf academy.

Willowdale Golf Club

18 holes

52 Willowdale Road, Scarborough


Green fees: Start at $33 for 18 holes without cart on weekends, $28 without cart on weekdays. After 4 p.m. Monday-Sunday, green fees are $18 for unlimited play ($29 with cart).

Overview: The 6,086-yard, par 70 course has scenic rivers bordering both the front and back nine. The course also features a pro shop, putting green, rental clubs, push and electric carts and food and beverage is available.

South Portland ?Municipal Golf Course

9 holes

155 Wescott Road, South Portland


Overview: This 34.4-acre course is a 2,071 yard par 33. It offers a clubhouse with restrooms, a snack bar and club and hand cart rentals. Call for more info and greens fees and tee times.

Sable Oaks Golf Club

18 holes

505 Country Club Drive, South Portland


Green fees: Specials and multi-passes are available. Single rounds range from $30-40, check the website for details.

Overview: Tucked in the woods just minutes from the Maine Mall and Portland International Jetport, Sable Oaks offers an escape from all the hustle and bustle with its trees, ponds, soft fairways and rolling greens.

Spring Meadows Golf Club

18 holes

59 Lewiston Road, Gray


Green fees: The weekday rate is $23 for nine holes and $36 for 18. Fees are slightly higher on the weekend. Cart rental (per person) is $11 for nine holes and $17 for 18. Internet specials are available on the website.

Overview: The course has received high marks from numerous publications. On the website, course designer and golf architect Brad Booth says, “I wanted to build a course people will enjoy playing, but giving a real stiff challenge from the back tees.”

Frye Island Golf Course

Green fees: Start at $34 on weekends and $24 on weekdays. Gas carts are available ($26 for 18 holes and $16 for 9 holes).

Overview: This island golf course, which was built in 1972, only has nine greens, but each hole has two sets of tees that allow golfers to play 18 holes with a different look on each nine.

The course, which is only accessible by ferry, has a clubhouse and a pro shop and refreshments are available.

Point Sebago Golf Resort

18 holes

Green fees: (Spring season) April open – May 20 18 holes with cart $39 on weekdays, $49 on the weekend. 9 holes with cart for $35 after 8 a.m. ($29 before 8 a.m.). (Summer season) May 21-Oct. 8: 18 holes with cart $49 on weekdays before 8 a.m. and $54 after 8 a.m., $59 on weekends before 8 a.m. and $64 after 8 a.m. 9 holes with cart for $35 on weekdays, $39 on weekends.

Overview: Part of the Point Sebago lakeside resort, the Point Sebago golf course caters to golfers of all levels of experience. Located on 500 acres of birch forest, the par 72 course ranges from just over 7,000 yards from the back tees to 3,200 years from the front tees.

Point Sebago also features golf clinics and golf schools with PGA professionals and has an extensive practice center with a driving range and putting greens for practicing putting, chipping, pitching and bunker shots.

Naples Golf and Country Club

18 holes

Route 114, Naples

Green fees: Before Memorial Day 18 holes for $24, 9 holes for $18. Unlimited play after 3 p.m. before Memorial Day is $18. Memorial Day until Labor Day 18 holes for $31, 9 holes for $29 on weekdays $33 on weekends. Unlimited play after 3 p.m. on weekends is $20.

Overview: The Naples Golf and Country Club, which was established as a nine-hole course in 1921, opened its back nine in 2000. The course, which is located along Brandy Pond, offers lessons as well as a pro shop, equipment repairs, food and beverage and wireless Internet access.

Salmon Falls Golf Course

9 holes

Route 202, Hollis


Green fees: 9 holes-$16, 18 holes-$22. Golf cart rates (based on two riders) $15 for 9 holes and $20 for 18 holes. Special rate of $60 for 2 golfers with cart for 18 holes is available. Ten-round punch cards are also available all season.
