To the editor:
I’m 84 years old and have lived in Maine most of my life.
With so many older residents in Maine, just like me, struggling to make ends meet, it is more important than ever for them to know that there are organizations out there willing to do whatever is possible to help us. A few weeks ago, I heard about the new AARP initiative, You’ve Earned a Say, which is a powerful way for Mainers everywhere to voice their opinion on the future of Social Security and Medicare.
These programs are absolutely essential for hundreds of thousands in Maine, seniors just like me who have worked hard all their lives and raised families and now are dependent on Social Security just to survive.
With You’ve Earned a Say, we now have a chance to make our voices heard loud and clear on what we think about these life-saving programs. We need to make lawmakers understand how important Social Security and Medicare are to us here in Maine so they understand that their decisions about these programs are going to affect all of us.
If you want to participate, you can speak up by filling out a questionnaire at www.earnedasay.org.
It’s too important not to.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
