LEWISTON — Oddfellow Theater performers and Michael Miclon’s Boo Dog Films will kick off their latest project, “Richard 3,” from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Royal Oak Room at Boo Dog Films, 1 Bates St.

The event will showcase many of the actors and film makers involved in creating “Richard 3,” a feature-length comedy based on Shakespeare’s “Richard III” that will begin shooting this summer in Maine.

“Attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the film and how it will be created, as well as learn how they can be involved in the production as extras, volunteers and crew,” a Boo Dog Films release states. “Ale House String Band, an Oddfellow Theater favorite, will provide music, the cast will be in character and out, there will be a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres and raffles.”

The release describes the origin of the film as follows:

In October 2005, Miclon and the Oddfellow Theater embarked on one of the most successful productions of its 14-year run, “Richard 3.” Along with Matthew Tardy, Miclon set out to find a way to make Shakespeare’s “Richard III” come to life through comedy.

The famed play of a hunchback maniacal king who murders his way to the top surprisingly and easily lent itself to the absurd.

Adding a twist or two to the original script and trimming away some of the less essential parts of the story, they created a script that told the story and utilized everything in their performing arsenal, from improvisation to juggling.

Since 2005, the idea of bringing this adaptation to the big screen has been percolating and in August 2011, the decision was made that this would be the first feature length film for Boo Dog Films. Miclon spent the next three months turning their live performance script into a screenplay.

Tickets cost $25 per person, and all proceeds from the night benefit the film project. To purchase tickets, go to www.boodogfilms.com.
