AUGUSTA (AP) — Gov. Paul LePage says he’s not picking a favorite in the sixway Republican primary race for the U.S. Senate.
In a statement Wednesday, the Republican governor says he’s decided not to endorse a candidate. He says Republicans have six well-qualified candidates to choose from in the June 12 primary.
They include former state Sen. Rick Bennett, businessman Scott D’Amboise, Secretary of State Charlie Summers, state Sen. Debra Plowman, state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin and Attorney General William Schneider. Four Democrats are running in their party’s primary, and four independents have entered the race.
LePage’s statement drew praise from Schneider, who said one his rivals, Poliquin, has been trying to “ride the governor’s coattails” in the campaign. Poliquin’s campaign dismissed that assertion as “desperate and incorrect.”
