PORTLAND — The city’s Task Force on Homelessness will host a public meeting on Thursday to present its recent work and have a discussion about future solutions to the persistent local issue.
Portland’s homeless population is constantly in flux as individuals lose and gain housing: last year, city staff helped almost 500 people find permanent housing, officials said. But the average has risen by 20 percent since 2008, and more than 350 people in the city are homeless at a given time, relying on six shelters throughout the city for assistance. Two of the shelters, Oxford Street and the Family Shelter, are city-owned.
The Task Force on Homelessness was formed in 2011 to develop a strategic plan to prevent homelessness in Portland. Thursday’s meeting will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Rines Auditorium in the Portland Public Library’s main branch at 389 Congress St.
