PORTLAND — The state Charter School Commission will hold a public hearing Monday for the proposed Baxter Academy for Technology and Science charter school.
The applications for Baxter Academy and another proposed charter school, Good Will-Hinckley’s Maine Academy of Natural Science, have passed the first round of review to move on to the public hearing and interview phase.
Baxter Academy plans to serve 160 greater-Portland area students in its first year and eventually double in size. Founder and Executive Director John Jacques announced last week that the not-yet approved charter school would offer enrollment through June and July.
If approved, Baxter Academy would be among the first charter schools in the state following a change in state law in January. Its first school day is planned for Sept. 10.
The public hearing on Baxter Academy will begin at 11 a.m. Monday in the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee Room (Room 202), Cross State Office Building, Augusta.
The applications for two proposed virtual charter schools have been postponed and will need to be re-submitted later this year in hopes of opening in 2013.
