LEWISTON — Air-conditioned Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library will host an evening of folk dancing today.

A Franco-style barn dance is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., during which Lewiston caller Cindy Larock will lead attendees in a selection of fun and easy “jigs and reels” dances, all of which have their roots in the old-time kitchen parties of Quebec. This portion of the evening is geared to families.

Guest caller Kim Roberts from Industry will take over the calling at 8 p.m. for three hours of up-tempo New England contradancing to music performed by Greg and Jessie Boardman, Rebecca Grube and Hannah Rodrigue.

The Boardmans are wellknown local fiddle teachers, with Greg having served for many years as the director of Lewiston’s public school string program for grades 4 through 8, where both Grube and Rodrigue — now in their early 20s — got their start as dance fiddlers.

“The contradancing promises to be user-friendly for all adults, regardless of experience, as well as for students from middle-school age and up,” a release from Larock states.

Instruction will be provided throughout the evening.

The cost to attend the family dance is $1 for all, and admission to the contradance is $5 with a reduced rate of $3 for students. The musicians and callers are donating their time and talents to make this program possible, with in-kind support from the library through its donation of space to host the event.

The Lewiston Public Library is located at 200 Lisbon St., at the corner of Park Street in downtown Lewiston.
