PHIPPSBURG
Four local agencies took part in a short-term investigation that led to the seizure of 50 growing marijuana plants from a Phippsburg man’s backyard Tuesday afternoon.

County Sheriff ’s Department, which investigated the marijuana grow along with Bath and Phippsburg police departments and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, said that Gilbert Marco Jr., 70, of 39 Main Road, received a summons for Class D cultivating marijuana at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. More charges are likely to follow, according to the sheriff ’s department detective.
Witnesses allegedly told law enforcement officials that marijuana plants were growing out in the open so that anyone passing by, canoeing or kayaking in the nearby waterway or walking along Main Road could see them.
The marijuana plants grew in plastic pots ranging from 1 to 7 feet high, according to the detective. The plants were seized and will be destroyed.
Marco is scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Oct. 9.
