BATH — Maine’s First Ship currently has two open student slots in the spar-making class. MFS is located in the Bath Freight Shed, at the foot of Lambard St., on the Kennebec River.
Students and adult volunteers are constructing a replica of “Virginia,” the first ship built by English colonists in the new world. MFS currently has three spars, the stem and the stern under construction. The project is under the direction of master shipwright Rob Stevens and student programing is led by boat builder George Sprague and teacher Eric Varney.
The public is encouraged to visit the shop to view the progress throughout the summer and fall months. The shop is open for visitors on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. until noon, as well as on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
