GORHAM – Officials from the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed that mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been found in Gorham, the second Maine community to report the disease.

According to our media partners at WCSH6-NEWSCENTER, state officials found the virus in a pool of mosquitoes taken from Gorham. Just last week, the CDC discovered the virus in a mosquito pool taken in Lebanon. No human cases of the disease have been found in either community.

Federal health officials have identified over 1,100 positive human cases of the disease this year, the highest number ever recorded in the U.S. West Nile Virus is an infection that causes few to no symptoms in most, but in rarer cases, it can cause severe neurological symptoms, and can be fatal.
