NEW YORK – New York slugger and first baseman Mark Teixeira is expected to rejoin the Yankees on Monday to play against Boston in a critical, season-ending series. The Yankees are tied for first place with the Orioles, and both teams have three games left to play in the regular season.
Teixeira has played just one game since Aug. 27 because of a strained left calf.
ORIOLES: The win over the Red Sox on Sunday clinched home field for the Orioles if there is a one-game tiebreaker to decide the AL East.
TIGERS: Pitcher Max Scherzer (shoulder) said he felt good after playing catch on Saturday and could be available to start the regular season finale against the Royals Wednesday.
Manager Jim Leyland said the team would be cautious with Scherzer, who missed a start with soreness in his deltoid.
ANGELS: Mike Trout, 21, became the youngest player with a 30-30 season of homers and stolen bases. He now needs two more stolen bases to become only the third MLB player with 30 homers and 50 stolen bases — a feat accomplished by Eric Davis in 1987 and Barry Bonds in 1990.
PIRATES: Pittsburgh recognized the 40th anniversary of Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th hit during a pregame ceremony.
NATIONALS: Rookie Bryce Harper, 19, has 22 homers — two shy of Tony Conigliaro’s record for teenaged major leaguers. Harper will turn 20 on Oct. 20.
CARDINALS: David Freese returned to the starting lineup after missing five starts with a sprained ankle.
METS: Atlanta’s Kris Medlen lined a foul ball into the Mets’ dugout in the fourth inning Sunday, hitting catcher Josh Thole. Thole’s right ear was red and swollen, but he said he passed a concussion test.
