BRUNSWICK — Led by 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Zach Donnarumma, the Bowdoin College football team picked up its first victory of the 2012 season with a 17-10 win over Tufts on Saturday.

The Polar Bears, who accumulated 215 yards on the ground as a team, improved to 1-2. The Jumbos fell to 0-3 and have lost 18 consecutive games.

Greg Pierce also contributed 73 yards on the ground for Bowdoin, while Thomas Romero went 13-for- 25 with 131 yards passing.

Bowdoin limited Tufts’ high-powered passing attack to 124 yards. Jumbos quarterback John Dodds was 21-of-36, with Pat Nee catching six passes for 56 yards. Justin Weaver gained 66 yards on the ground.

Tufts attempted to catch Bowdoin off-guard on the first play from scrimmage, running a reverse wide-receiver option pass, but Matt Johnson’s toss was intercepted by Beau Breton, giving the Polar Bears great field position.

Though the Polar Bears failed to cash in the opportunity, Bowdoin found its rhythm as the Polar Bears marched 51 yards in 14 plays to set up a 41-yard field goal from Jimmy Garvey.

Tufts responded with a 10- play, 54-yard drive, capped by a 22-yard field goal from Connor McDavitt to even the score early in the second quarter.

Bowdoin drove 93 yards on 10 plays on its next possession, with Donnarumma scoring on a 21-yard run for a 10-3 Polar Bear lead at the half.

A fumble by Pierce to start the second half allowed Tufts to tie the contest right out of the break. Weaver carried the ball five times on a seven-play drive for the Jumbos, including a 3-yard plunge up the middle to tie the game.

Still tied heading to the fourth quarter, Bowdoin assumed the lead for good on a 5-yard dive to paydirt by Donnarumma with 2:36 to go.

Tufts took the kickoff and drove to the B-32 with under a minute to play. But, a fourthand nine pass by Dodds was broken up by Jon Fraser to seal the victory.

Griffin Cardew made 14 tackles to lead Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears will travel to play at Hamilton this upcoming Saturday at noon.

Women’s volleyball

Bowdoin took a pair of important conference wins on Saturday.

The Polar Bears opened the day with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25- 19) win at Bates College before returning to Brunswick for a dramatic 3-2 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 19-25, 15-13) win over Tufts.

The Polar Bears improved to 15-2 (6-1 NESCAC).

Against Bates, Tory Edelman had nine kills with only one attack error, and Sophia Cornew added six kills, 23 assists and 15 digs. Bowdoin also received five kills from Emese Gaal and 14 digs from Taylor Vail.

In the thrilling win over Tufts, Bowdoin was led by 12 kills from Melissa Haskell, who also added 23 digs. Christy Jewett had 10 kills and nine blocks, while Ellie Brennan pitched in 10 kills and seven blocks. Edelman also saw double-digits with 10 kills, while Cornew added 46 assists.

The Polar Bears will play next at Maine Maritime on Tuesday.

On Friday, Haskell finished with 11 kills and Cornew had 30 assists as Bowdoin took a 3- 0 victory over Colby.

Bowdoin took big leads in all three sets in taking a 25-13, 25-12, 25-22 win.

Brooke Phinney scored a pair of first-half goals to propel Bowdoin to a 3-0 win over Williams on Sunday afternoon at Ryan Field.

The sixth-ranked Polar Bears extended their winning streak to five games and improved to 9-1 (5-1 NESCAC) this fall. Bowdoin has outscored its opponents 26-1 during the streak.

The Ephs lost their second game in as many days and dropped to 5-5 (3-4 NESCAC).

Bowdoin got on the board twice courtesy of Phinney in the opening period on nearly identical plays. Katie Riley inserted the ball on a penalty corner to the stick of Kassey Matoin, who set the ball for a low blast from Phinney just 7:59 into the contest.

Nearly seven minutes later, Phinney converted a carboncopy penalty corner opportunity at 14:16 to give the hosts a two-goal edge at the break.

The Polar Bears put the game on ice midway through the second half when Riley played a pass ahead to Adrienne O’Donnell, who lifted a shot over oncoming Williams goaltender Ariana Spiliotes for a 3-0 lead at 50:45.

Cathleen Smith had a hand in all three goals as the Polar Bears defeated rival Colby 3-0 on Saturday at Waterville.

Riley, who had a goal and an assist, scored the gamewinning goal at 7:31 of the opening half. Smith’s centering pass was blasted into the back of the cage by Riley.

The duo reversed roles at 15:25. This time Riley had the cross and Smith scored her first goal of the game from in front on a hard blast.

Smith added the final goal with 45:50 on a play that started off a penalty corner. Phinney earned an assist.

Bowdoin had a 21-2 shots advantage and a 5-1 margin in penalty corners.

The Polar Bears will return to action with back-to-back road games this upcoming weekend at Hamilton on Saturday and at Amherst on Sunday.

Women’s soccer

Bridget Gallagher scored the game’s only goal as Williams dealt Bowdoin its first home loss with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

The Ephs improved to 7-2-1 (6-0-1 NESCAC), while Bowdoin fell to 8-2 (4-2 NESCAC) with the setback.

Gallagher came off the bench to deliver the gamewinning goal in the 15th minute. She received a pass from Carla Nicasio on the right side of the box and ripped a strike that tucked inside the left post, just beyond the outstretched arms of Bowdoin netminder Bridget McCarthy at 14:03.

The Polar Bears’ best chance came off a perfectlyplace corner kick by Alexa Yurick with 11 minutes to go. The ball came to the head of Toni DaCampo, forcing a diving save by Williams goaltender Hannah Van Wetter.

McCarthy finished with two saves in the loss for Bowdoin.

Morgan Woodhouse scored off a header with 9:25 left in the game to break a scoreless tie and lead Bowdoin to a 2-0 victory over Colby in more NESCAC play on Saturday at Waterville.

Kiersten Turner picked up the assist on Woodhouse’s goal off a cross.

Alexa Yurick added an insurance goal with 4:25 to play when she knocked in a shot from in front.

McCarthy stopped five shots for the shutout. Emily Brook had six saves for the Mules.

Bowdoin will visit Hamilton on Saturday and Amherst on Sunday.

Men’s soccer

Chris Seitz headed home the game-winning goal on a broken play in the second overtime to lift Williams to a 3-2 win over Bowdoin on Sunday afternoon.

The 17th-ranked Ephs improved to 7-0-2 (5-0-2 NESCAC), while the Polar Bears (7-2-1, 3-2-1 NESCAC) lost a game for the first time since Sept. 8.

Bowdoin gained the early advantage as a mix-up by the Williams defenders resulted in the ball coming to Andrew Jones on the left wing. He centered a pass to Zach Danssaert, who tucked a onetimer inside the left post at 12:04.

Williams answered 17 minutes later when a Bowdoin turnover in the midfield gave the Ephs an odd-man rush. Mohammed Rashid played a pass to User Kushaina, who slipped a shot inside the right post to deadlock the game at 29:29.

The Ephs grabbed the lead shortly after intermission when Matt Kastner headed a cross inside the left post off a nifty cross from Chris Conder at 49:21.

This time the Polar Bears answered when Eric Goitia’s corner kick into a crowd was headed home by Andrew Gray to force the extra session.

Bowdoin controlled the play through the first overtime and most of the second, garnering two great chances. The first opportunity came just moments into the first OT as a Goitia corner kick bounced dangerously around the penalty area before being cleared by Williams. A Bowdoin breakaway resulted in a shot by Danssaert that Eph goaltender Peter Morrell of Brunswick was able to kick save to keep the game deadlocked.

The game-winning goal came on a Williams counter-attack from midfield. A deflected shot appeared to be headed out of bounds for an Eph corner kick, but was instead headed off the endline by a Bowdoin defender. The ball soared towards the middle of the penalty area, where it deflected of Seitz’s body and into the back of the net.

Bowdoin held a 21-14 advantage in shots, including a 5-2 advantage in overtime. Morrell stopped seven shots, while Will Wise made four saves for Bowdoin.

Eddie Jones scored 8:45 into the game off a pass from Andrew Jones with what proved to be the game-winning goal as Bowdoin defeated rival Colby 2-0 on Saturday in NESCAC action at Waterville.
