BRUNSWICK

A Mt. Desert Island woman is in critical condition this afternoon at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a serious crash on Route 1 Wednesday night.

Brunswick police and fire department responded at 8:26 p.m. to a car that had driven off the road and struck a tree. The only occupant in the 2006 Volvo was the driver, 56-year-old Patti Reilly of Mt. Desert Island.

The crash occurred on Route 1 southbound about a mile from Cook’s Corner. Deputy Fire Chief Don Koslosky said the car came to rest down an embankment after striking a tree on the driver’s side. The driver was pinned by the driver’s-side door, which was bent during impact. Firefighters used a Jaws of Life to extricate the woman, cutting both sides of the vehicle. She was transported to Maine Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Koslosky said the patient never regained consciousness during the rescue. A LifeFlight helicopter was called but could not fly due to weather.

Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said this afternoon the cause of the crash is still under investigation and is being handled by the Brunswick Collision Reconstruction Unit. Early indications are that the car hydroplaned and left the roadway and hit a tree.
