BRUNSWICK — Muriel Mutch Crocker, 92, died Oct. 14 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta.

Crocker was born in a logging camp, deep in the woods of northern Maine, the daughter of Samuel Albert Mutch and Mary Bridget Hare Mutch. She grew up on the family farm in Bradley. She graduated from Old Town High School in 1937.

On Dec. 31, 1938, she married her husband, George Henry Crocker of Bangor. Shortly afterward, they moved to Brunswick. Her husband was employed at the Bath Iron Works until he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After his return in 1946 from service in the Pacific, the couple opened George’s Store on Maine Street, a neighborhood store that was one of the first in Brunswick to sell steamed hot dogs and Italian sandwiches. It was a favorite of many of the returning World War II veterans who attended Bowdoin College.

In early 1951, the Crockers purchased a business block on lower Maine Street, which included apartments and several retail businesses. On this block they opened George’s Cafe, a favorite of local mill employees and personnel stationed at Brunswick Naval Air Station.

Later, Crocker worked as a credit manager J.J. Newberry’s, until multiple sclerosis forced her into early retirement. She and her husband then enjoyed many happy days at their cottage on Pleasant Pond. She was an avid fan of the Boston Celtics, Red Sox and New England Patriots. 

She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, George Henry Crocker, five sisters, three brothers and a nephew, Kenneth Norris Mutch. 

She is survived by her only son, George K. Crocker and his wife, Carolyn, of Austin, Texas; grandson Trevor P. Crocker and his wife, Ashley, of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter Tomee Crocker Heining and her husband, Jon, of Austin, Texas; five great-grandchildren; nieces Judy Dority Sucy, of Oakland, and Helen Mutch, of Georgetown, Mass.; a grand neice, Karen Mutch Jones, and her husband, Dan, of Hanover, Mass.; and a great-nephew, Paul Mutch, and his wife, Jessica, of Belmont, Mass. 

Memorial services and interment will be held at a later date at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are being handled by Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal St., Brunswick.
