ORONO — The University of New Hampshire scored 15 points in the final minute of the first half to dig out of a two-touchdown hole and retain possession of the Brice-Cowell Musket in the 100th football edition of the Maine-New Hampshire rivalry.
The Wildcats won 28-21 on a damp and occasionally rainy Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium to extend Maine’s winless home season.
Red-shirt freshman quarterback Sean Goldrich threw two touchdown passes to tight end Harold Spears, the second of which capped a run of 28 straight points after Maine had opened a 14-0 lead.
The Black Bears pulled within a touchdown at 28-21 on a 23-yard scoring pass from Marcus Wasilewski to Arthur Williams on the second play of the fourth quarter.
But that would be all for the Black Bears (2-5 overall, 1-3 CAA), whose final three possessions ended with a punt.
No. 14 New Hampshire (6-2, 3-1) has won nine of the past 10 games with Maine.
