Scarborough 3, Westbrook 0

SCARBOROUGH – Even highly skilled teams like Scarborough High’s field hockey team can use some sell-out hustle.

That’s what the Red Storm got from Emily Bunting when the senior literally dove to get her stick on a rebound of an Abby Walker drive off Westbrook goalie Nicole Miranda’s pads. Bunting scored on the play, giving Scarborough the first goal and the undefeated and top-ranked Red Storm went on to a 3-0 Western A semifinal victory.

“We’ve been through so much, I just wanted us to keep going. We’re such a strong team, I had to dive for it. I mean, it was just there,” Bunting said. “I was like, ‘you know what, if I get hurt, I get hurt. It’s for the team.’”

No. 1 Scarborough (16-0), which has not allowed a goal this season, will play for its third Western Maine title in five years against either No. 2 Cheverus or No. 3 Marshwood in Tuesday’s regional final. Cheverus led Marshwood, 1-0, late in the second half of the other A semifinal.

The Class B and Class C regional finals are also at Scarborough. Game times will be 3:30, 5:30 and 7:30. The order will be set early in the week.

Scarborough Coach Kerry Mariello said Bunting’s effort was emblematic of Scarborough field hockey, ca. 2012.

“If anyone were in that spot, every single girl on this team would have done the same thing. That’s the kind of mentality this team has,” Mariello said. “If I could have this particular team minus the record and all the scoring and the win-loss type of thing, I’d have this team every year for the rest of my career because they’re that special.”
No. 4 Westbrook (11-3-2) came out with intensity and generated four first-half penalty corners. What it couldn’t do, until less than 4:30 remained in the game, was crack the Scarborough defense and put a shot on goal.
