CUMBERLAND — The Massabesic, Cape Elizabeth and Hall-Dale boys posted victories in the Western Class A cross country meet Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation Area.

In the girls’ races, Bonny Eagle, Falmouth and Merriconeag enjoyed victories.

The top 50 percent of the  teams in each race, as well as the top 30 individuals, qualified for next week’s state championship.

In the Class A boys, Massabesic upset two-time defending state champion Scarborough, 31 points to 60. George Morrison (17:29.66) and Mike Aboud (17:29.93) finished 1-2 for the Mustangs.

The other six teams to qualify were Marshwood, Gorham, Windham, Biddeford, South Portland and Deering.

In Class A girls, Bonny Eagle unseated three-time state champion Cheverus, which finished third, behind Massabesic. Nyajock Pan of South Portland won the individual race in 19:52.15.

The other five teams to qualify were South Portland, Thornton Academy, Marshwood, Windham and Sanford.

In Class B, Fryeburg Academy’s Silas Eastman continued his dominance, wining in 16:47.39. Cape Elizabeth, paced by the 3-4 finish of Peter Doane and Liam Simpson, tallied 64 points.

York (100) finished second. Defending state champion Falmouth (105), which was resting two runners, was third. The other qualifiers were Fryeburg Academy, Maranacook, Freeport, Yarmouth and Greely.

Falmouth won Class B girls with 66 points, ahead of Yarmouth (93), Freeport (107) and Maranacook (113).

Greely’s Kirsten Sandreuter (19:57.60) won the race, pacing the Rangers to fifth place.  Cape Elizabeth was the sixth qualifying team.

In Class C boys, Jack Pierce won with the fastest time of the day (16:38.28). Hall-Dale won the team race with 92 points. The other seven qualifiers were Waynflete, Boothbay, Winthrop, Monmouth, North Yarmouth Academy, Telstar and Lisbon.

Sophia Thayer of Boothbay won the Class C girls’ race (21:12.77), while Merriconeag totaled 79 points for the team win, ahead of runner-up Waynflete (85). The three other qualifiers were Dirigo, Boothbay and Monmouth.
