PORTLAND — A public meeting to discuss a Safe Routes to School project for Presumpscot Elementary School will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the school.
The meeting, hosted by City Councilor Cheryl Leeman and the city Department of Public Services, will explore using some of a $90,000 grant received for safety enhancements around the city.
A portion of the grant has been designated to enhance safety of two school crossings at Presumpscot Elementary School. The Safe Routes for Schools project calls for the construction of raised pedestrian islands, pedestrian-activated flasher systems and improved curb ramps at crosswalks.
The grant will be supplemented with funds from the city’s capital improvement fund and construction is expected to begin sometime next year.
