St. Dom’s survived its own shooting woes and a comeback by the Lisbon Greyhounds in a 38-37 Mountain Valley Conference girls high school basketball win on Monday.

Though Lisbon shot sevenfor 15 in the final quarter to spark its comeback, the Greyhounds missed a try at the game-winner in the closing seconds. That was after St. Dom’s missed its first seven shots to start the third and finished just five-for-25 from the floor in the second half. Most of the misses were layups in the paint.

“They were all around the basket,” said Berry, whose team improved to 5-2. “They were pressing us. We’re making the right passes. We attacked the basket. I have no fault with anything my kids did during that stretch. If we make those baskets, I’m a little happier with the outcome.

“But when you’re as young as we are and you hold on with the edges of your fingernails like this, you’ve got a lot of intangibles.”

Lisbon, which was down by as many as 11, finished the fourth with an 8-2 run that cut the deficit to one. After an Adrianna White rebound of a missed free throw, Lisbon had one last chance at the final shot. The Greyhounds took a timeout to draw up the play.

“We were looking to get it into the post and attack,” Lisbon coach Julie Wescott said. “Our pass got bobbled around, and we didn’t get the best quality shot that we wanted. We got a shot off, but it didn’t fall. I told the girls that that’s basketball. Sometimes it falls and sometimes it doesn’t. I’m still proud of them.”

Lisbon (2-6) got the ball in on the left sideline. After the inbounds pass was bobbled, the Greyhounds got it to Denise Thomas just outside the paint. Her only option was to put up a quick leaner that didn’t drop. St. Dom’s did a fine job pressuring the ball and not fouling in those final seconds.

“We didn’t want them to dictate what was going to happen,” Berry said. “We tried to be practice with our defense on that, and they almost did it. They did a great job.”

Callie Greco led St. Dom’s with 17 points. She had four points during an 8-0 run to end the first, putting the Saints up 17-11. Then she had eight straight as St. Dom’s built a 27-16 lead at the half.

Kelly Pomerleau added 12 while Faith Grady chipped in eight.

Berry also noted the presence of Bryanna Handlon and Alexis Dwinell in the post. They controlled the boards and were key in forcing Lisbon’s offense to work from the outside.

“They’re really good at crashing the boards,” Berry said. “One of our keys was keeping them off the boards. I thought Alexis and Bryanna did an excellent job containing them.”

Thomas finished with 10 points for Lisbon, while Mia Durgin and Bailey Madore each had nine.

Lisbon had the chance to rally when St. Dom’s shot just two-for-14 in the third and had nine turnovers. Lisbon’s 11 turnovers slowed the visitors, with St. Dom’s taking a 32-22 lead to the fourth.

The Greyhounds got hot in a hurry, hitting four straight to start the final quarter. Thomas scored twice and BreeSautterhita3toerase the double-digit lead. After a Grady basket, Lisbon got baskets from Elyssa Hubert and Thomas to make it 34-33 with 3:46 remaining.

Greco scored in the paint and Pomerleau converted a steal, but Thomas scored in the paint and then set up a Durgin jumper with 27 seconds left to make it 38-37.

“We definitely try to have our defensive energy help our offense,” said Wescott, whose team has lost six straight. “It helps. We haven’t been shooting great this season. It was nice to hit some outside shots and get some confidence back. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the last one to drop, but I thought we definitely made progress.”
