The newest elected officials took their places and were sworn in during a relatively brief Town Council meeting Monday.
Some are first-timers, such as school board representatives Joy Prescott and Chris McCarthy. Others, such as reelected school board incumbent Corinne Perreault and returning council incumbents Suzan Wilson and John Perrault, are veterans of municipal office.
New At-Large town councilor John G. Richardson Jr. also is a seasoned politician, having served 12 years in the state Legislature and mounted an unsuccessful Blaine House bid in 2010. When asked after the meeting if election to the Town Council was the beginning of his next gubernatorial campaign in 2014, Richardson said that he was done running for governor but instead likely would run for a state Senate seat during the next election cycle.
After the inauguration ceremony, Wilson and Margo Knight of District 6 were elected council chairwoman and vice chairwoman, respectively; across the hall, school board members re-elected Jim Grant as their chairman and chose Michele Joyce as vice chairwoman.
In the meeting’s only other business, councilors set their meeting schedule for the rest of 2013, voted to retain Portland law firm Bernstein Shur as the town’s legal counsel, and set several committee appointments:
Wilson and Richardson will serve as council liaisons to Brunswick Development Corp.; David Watson will remain on the Cable Television committee; Sarah Brayman again will work on Recycling and Sustainability; Wilson remains on Marine Resources.
Brayman, Watson and Ben Tucker also will remain on the council’s Appointments Subcommittee.
