RUMFORD — Day one of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Skiing Championships were held on Wednesday at Black Mountain, while the Western Maine Conference Championships were at Stark’s Hill in Fryeburg.
KVACs
Mt. Ararat High School’s Sam Wood placed second overall in the Nordic freestyle event, crossing the finish line in 15:46.3. Hampden Academy’s Dustin Ramsay was first in 15:07.6.
Other competitors from Mt. Ararat were Nate MacKenzie (24th, 18:17.8), James McCracken (30th, 19:13.8), Jonah Levy (39th, 20:08.0), Thomas Emerson (41st, 20:24.3), Connor Read (42nd, 20:26.3), Nathan Sprague (48th, 21:13.9), Ted Burns (54th, 22:33) and TJ Ackerman (67th, 31:18.4).
In the girls KVAC freestyle, Sarah Wade of Mt. Blue crossed the finish line ahead of the pack in 17:54.4, followed by Maranacook’s Caroline Colan in 18:18.6.
The top local finisher was Brunswick’s Lena Martin, who took sixth with a time of 20:12.4.
For Mt. Ararat, Torri Pelletier was 18th in 21:48.5, followed by teammate Emma Levy in 23rd-place with a time of 22:27.9. Other Eagle finishers were Eleanor Skinner (34th, 24:57.7), Marie Ring (38th, 25:12.1), Bronwyn Caswell- Riday (41st, 25:39.3), Dani Ingle (48th, 27:33.3), Reyanne Brooks (57th, 30:30.1), Isabella Leon (61st, 34:06.7) and Sarah Ashey (63rd, 41:30.4).
WMCs
Led by the 1-2 finish of Zoe Chace-Donahue (18:01.4) and Emelie Chace-Donahue (18:08.8), Merriconeag-Waldorf School leads with 22 points, with Yarmouth (28 points) and Freeport (53) in second and third, respectively.
Freeport’s Elizabeth Martin, in a time of 18:11.5, was third in the 5.8K event, with Merriconeag Waldorf ’s Samantha Pierce in fifth (18:34.0).
Other Falcons to finish were Bethanie Knighton (16th, 20:21.6), Fiona Ahearne (20th, 20:32.8), Nina Moore (22nd, 20:35.9), Lia Wellen (30th, 21:03.5), Lily LaMarre (36th, 22:03.2), Lucy Zachau (56th, 25:32.1) and Taylor Schenker (75th, 32:07.6).
Merriconeag had Teagan Wu (16th, 20:21.6), Lily Tupper (27th, 20:55.3) and Carlin Tindall (21:01.3).
In the boys competition, Merriconeag’s Jack Pierce was the top local finisher, taking third in 15:14.4, with Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy crossing in first in a blistering time of 14:08.2.
Other Merriconeag competitors were Ben Tindall (seventh, 15:59.6), Graham Roeber (ninth, 16:26.9), John Burgess (16th, 17:19.5), Zach Neveu (18th, 17:23.8) and Lars Gundersen (43rd, 18:55.2).
For Freeport, Forest McCurdy was sixth in 15:56.6. Other Falcons were Mason Cyr (28th, 17:50.9), Quinn Downing (31st, 18:11.5), Nick Nelsonwood (33rd, 18:16.7), Zach Merrill (45th, 19:08.5), Bennett Brainard (46th, 19:11.9), Joseph Biberstein (63rd, 20:26.8), Chris West (68th, 21:23.9) and Liam Wade (80th, 27:40.5).
Yarmouth leads at the midway point with 24 points, with Merriconeag in second (35 points) and Freeport fifth (87).
Day two of the KVAC and WMC Championships are slated for Saturday, with the WMCs back at Stark’s Hill and the KVACs shifting to Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.
