PORTLAND — Registration for public kindergarten and pre-kindergarten classes for the 2013-2014 school year will take place by appointment during the weeks of Feb. 25-March 1 and March 4-8, the School Department announced.

Kindergarten registration is available for students who will be 5 years old by Oct. 1, 2013, at the school in the child’s neighborhood. Parents must provide a birth certificate, immunization records and proof of residency.

Parents should contact the Multilingual Intake Center at 874-8135 if their child comes from a home where English is a second language. The center will oversee language proficiency testing and health screenings, as well as registration. The center is at Lyman Moore Middle School, 171 Auburn St.

Pre-kindergarten programs at Portland Arts and Technology High School, Riverton Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School and Youth and Family Services are open to children from any neighborhood and follow the same calendar as the rest of the schools in the district. The school day is 8:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Parents are responsible for transportation.

Applications for the program are available at all elementary schools.

Parents should contact their neighborhood elementary school for more information or to make a registration appointment. Parents who aren’t sure which school their child should attend should call 874-8237.
