PORTLAND — The School Department is seeking volunteers to safely shepherd students to school as it hopes to be the first city in the state with a coordinated, regular “walking school bus” program.

Volunteer leaders will supervise students walking to either Reiche Community School or East End Community school as a part of the new program, which begins in April.

Leaders will follow a route of up to one mile, picking up children at designated spots along the way. All volunteers will receive an hour of training and should be available twice a week between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. and/or 3 to 4 p.m. Criminal background checks are required.

To find out more about becoming involved, visit portlandwalkingschoolbus.org or contact Betsy Critchfield at betsy@bikemaine.org or 200-5287.
