Ben Polito, president and co-founder of Pika Energy in Gorham that makes wind turbines, is one of three finalists in Gorham Savings Bank’s LaunchPad competition.

The public can vote in the competition for the winner, who the bank said “must demonstrate an idea with the greatest potential to benefit the Maine economy such as added jobs, new products or services, enhanced exports or cost saving efficiencies.”

Polito is competing against two Brunswick men – Jeremy Litchfield of Atayne and Christopher Kincade of Green Bee Soda. The winner, who will be awarded $30,000, will be announced on Thursday, April 11.

Presentations of the candidates can be viewed at the bank’s web site GorhamSavingsBank.com/LaunchPad and on line voting began on March 25.

A panel of judges on March 21 selected the three finalists from a field of seven that included Scott Rehart of Montecito Roadhouse, Inc., in Westbrook.

The competition drew 250 applicants.

String quartet in Gorham performance

The University of Southern Maine School of Music will present a master class with the Larchmere String Quartet from Indiana at 5-7 p.m. on Monday, April 1, in Corthell Concert Hall on USM’s Gorham campus.

The Larchmere group was founded in 2011 at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The quartet members are Eykamp String Quartet in residence at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind.,, and are the principal string players of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the Gorham master class performance, two University of Sothern Maine chamber groups will be critiqued by the members of the Larchmere Quartet.

Master classes present a unique opportunity for music lovers to see and hear some of the exceptional study and discipline required to master an instrument.

Tickets are $6 at the door (no charge for USM music majors, USM Youth Ensembles members, and USM music summer camp participants).

GHS thespian benefit April 4

The Gorham High School Thespian Society is hosting the annual Theatre Student and Alumni Showcase at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, April 4, in the McCormack Performing Arts Center at the school, 41 Morrill Ave.

“Don’t miss this evening of wonderful musical and theatrical entertainment and the opportunity to meet and talk with Gorham theater students and fellow alumni,” Eileen Avery, director, said in a statement.

Admission is $5 and $3 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Gorham High School Thespian Society.

The International Thespian Society is a nationwide honor society celebrating excellence in theater. “At Gorham High School, the thespian society commemorates actors, stagehands, and other artists who love and are affiliated with theatre,” Avery said.

Triad to hear Miller

A nurse, Rebecca Miller, will speak when Gorham-Westbrook Triad meets at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 12, in Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St. Miller’s topic is drug misuse with the elderly.

Triad is a collaborative of senior citizens, law enforcement and community services that promotes safety and wellbeing of seniors.

Archives to reopen in April

The Gorham Historical Society archives at 28 School St. will be open in April on Thursdays 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to October.
