Sea Captain Carroll (Bud) Orville Darling passed away Easter Sunday morning, March 31, 2013, at home in Cundy’s Harbor. He was born in Cundy’s Harbor, April 8th 1929, the son of Pauline and Merton Darling.

After attending local schools he briefly attended Potter Academy, Sebago, Me. He served in the U.S. Army 1946-1949 in the Transportation Corp. at Fort Eustis, Va. In 1947 he married the love of his life Olive G. Riley.

In his life time he was a commercial fisherman, hard hat diver, truck driver, wharf builder, underwater salvager, a self-taught mechanical engineer and dabbled in dynamiting. Other endeavors included (but not limited to) submarines, flying machines and dams. He held a special fascination with steam engines. He loved animals of all kinds and had a large variety over his life time. His favorite pastime was camping with family. He loved Jesus, his Lord and Savior and his family.

He is survived by his wife Olive of 66 years; brothers, Earland, Daniel, and Clinton; children, Rebecca Longley (Andrew M. Longley II, deceased), Juanita Valdez, Diana Ohmacht, “Buster” Orville Darling (Betsy) and Veronica Gonsior (Dean); ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will take place at Cundy’s Harbor Community Hall (837 Cundy’s Harbor Road) on April 7th at 2:00 PM.
