Ted grew up in South Paris, ME, while spending summers at his family’s camp in Oxford. Ted was the valedictorian of the Oxford Hills High School, graduating class of 1987. He attended Bates College, majoring in French with a minor in psychology, graduating magna cum laude in 1991. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1991.
After college, Ted worked at the Hawthorne-Longfellow Library at Bowdoin College. While Ted spent most of his time in the circulation department, the highlight of his professional work at Bowdoin involved cataloguing volumes from the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Nathaniel Hawthorne collections along with other projects allowing him to make use of his fluency in French.
Upon leaving Bowdoin in 2003, Ted returned to his alma mater to serve as technical advisor and editor, designing web pages from concept to execution for E-clectic, the online magazine showcasing student creative endeavors in the humanities.
As digital technician for the dean of the faculty’s office at Bates College, Ted worked on a range of projects requiring advanced technical expertise, from an extensive website and surveys for students and alumni to technical oversight of the college’s annual student research symposium. The go-to guy for all things Apple, Ted guided many colleagues through conversions to iPhones, iPods, iPads, and other emerging technologies. He was immensely generous with his knowledge, helping colleagues in the dean’s office and beyond to solve technical problems and find more efficient ways of working using technology.
Ted loved spending time with his family, friends, and his dog Bailey; summers at his family’s camp; cooking; working with computers; mastering emerging technologies; and watching movies.
Ted is survived by his father, Larry, and sister, Grace, both of South Paris. His mother, Fran; his maternal grandparents, Milton and Marian Hibbard; and his paternal grandparents, Lucien and Yvette Cloutier, predeceased him.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Oxford Hills Church of Christ, 140 Paris Hill Road, South Paris, with Rev. Judith Robbins, interim pastor of Sheepscott Community Church, Newcastle, officiating. Family and friends attended visitation on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 45 Main St., South Paris.
