‘The 39 Steps’ coming soon

The Freeport Players will present “The 39 Steps,” with Chris Holt, Chelsea Cook, Bill McDonough and Eric Worthley, and directed by Dan Burson. The production will run from July 18-Aug. 4 at the Freeport Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are available online at www.fcponline.org and cash sales are available at the Freeport Community Center Thrift Store. Admission is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Group discounts are available. For more information, contact Elizabeth at [email protected].

Alumni field hockey team practicing

The Freeport High School alumni field hockey players have begun practices for the second annual Field Hockey Alumni Fundraiser. All practices are on Mondays from 6-8 p.m. at the high school field hockey field on Holbrook Street. All are welcome to participate.

Program focuses on tick, mosquito illnesses

Kate Colby, field epidemiologist from Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention, will present general information focused on the prevention of tick-borne infections such as Lyme disease, mosquito-borne infections such as West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and rash caused by brown tail moths, on Wednesday, July 17, from 5-6 p.m. in the Freeport Town Hall Chambers.

The program is sponsored by the town and the Cumberland District of the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention. The session is free and open to the public.

Street construction update

The town will be reconstructing West Street and building a new asphalt sidewalk with granite curb along the north side. The street will be slightly re-aligned and widened for safer use. The project will start by the middle of June and the curb and sidewalk should be completed by the end of September. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times and flaggers will be used when necessary.

Church serving up pancakes

St. Jude Catholic Church will hold its 22nd annual blueberry pancake and sausage breakfast Thursday, uly 4, from 7-10 a.m., on the corner of Main and School streets. Hundreds are expected to turn out. A large breakfast is $6 and a small breakfast is $5. Call 847-6890 for more information.

Masons cooking spaghetti

A spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday, July 20, from 5-8 p.m., at the Freeport Masonic Lodge, located at 33 Mallett Drive. The price is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds/donations will help sponsor local teen Caleb Rice, who will be attending the National Youth Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.

Community Services seeks lunch help

Freeport Community Services is in need of volunteers to help with the Free Summer Lunch for Kids program. Volunteers are needed to help make sandwiches or deliver them to meal sites for children without summer lunches during the week. Help is also needed in the thrift shop and furniture store as well as other special projects. To volunteer, call Debbie at 865-3985.

Historical society hosting walking tours

The Freeport Historical Society is hosting guided walking tours of historic Freeport Village every Thursday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m. beginning June 13. Tours start at the Harrington House, 45 Main St., and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear. Tickets are $10 for adults, FHS members are $5.

Library news and notes

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.

Art in the Library for July features the en plein air oils of Alexandra Perry-Weiss

Explore Maine Lighthouses with educator, historian and entertaining raconteur Bud Warren on Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m.

Tracking Maine Mammals will be featured on Wednesday, July 10 at 6 p.m. Wolfe’s Neck State Park’s Making Tracks program will be at the library to teach what kinds of tracks animals leave behind and participants can make their own animal track to take home. It’s for children in the summer reading program.

The Library Book Group’s July selection is “The Host,” by Stephanie Meyer. The group typically meets the first Wednesday of the month but because of the July 4th holiday they will meet on July 10 at 6 p.m. The August selection is “My Family and Other Animals,” by Gerald Durrell. The group will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m.

The Thursday Midday Movie for Thursday, July 11 at 1 p.m. will be “Life of Pi.” Running time is 2 hours, 7 minutes and is rated PG. The Aug. 8 movie, also at 1 p.m., is “Quartet,” starring Maggie Smith, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Tom Courtney and Michael Gambon. It’s the first film directed by Dustin Hoffman. It is rated PG-13.
