Baxter Museum open for tours

The Baxter Museum, 67 South St, next to Baxter Memorial Library, in Gorham is open for free tours from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through August.

The house was built in 1797 as a private home. A benefactor, James Phinney Baxter, gave the town the library and his family home as a museum in 1907, and both buildings opened to the public in 1908.

Baxter’s father had been a country doctor in Gorham. A son of James Phinney Baxter, Percival Baxter, became a Maine governor.

Free gazebo concert

Edith Jones Project, Maine’s only all-women big band, will be in concert 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, at the gazebo on the lawn at Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.

Take a picnic, blanket or chair, and enjoy the show. Parking is available along South Street or in the municipal lot.

The concert is part of a free series on Tuesdays sponsored by the Gorham Recreation Department. The series continues through Aug. 6.

Founders festival taking shape

The third annual Gorham Founders Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27, adjacent to the Narragansett Elementary School on Main Street in Gorham.

Festival features being planned include a fair midway with food and entertainment; a parade; auction; and fireworks.

The festival kicks off at 6 p.m. on July 26, and a pancake breakfast opens festivities on July 27.

The Westbrook-Gorham Chamber of Commerce is organizing this year’s festival, with Darryl Wright as director.

The festival honors early Gorham settlers who began arriving in 1736 in what was then a wilderness.

Zarrilli excels

Kristina Zarrilli of Gorham has been named to the dean’s list with high honors for the spring semester at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.

Wing on dean’s list

Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., has announced that Seth Wing of Gorham is on the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Wing, a junior, is majoring in finance.

GHS 50th reunion

The Gorham High School class of 1963 will get together for a reunion dinner from 4-8 p.m., on Saturday, July 13, at Treworgy’s Barn, 120 Flaggy Meadow Road. Gorham.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on June 26 that the U.S. public debt was $16,738,580,905,836.39.
