To the Editor:

I appreciated the recent letter by Gene Proctor (“Prochoice view is indeed imperfect,” June 21, Page A12). While we still disagree on important issues, there was a more civil tone to his letter.

I wish to clarify several points. Gene thought I insinuated that he lacked compassion for children. I was insinuating exactly the opposite, and demonstrating the absurdity of using that argument against those opposed to abortion.

Gene stated that my accusation that he was demonizing pro-lifers ignored certain legislative activity. This is not true. Many who would ban abortions are caring people who sacrifice much to stand up for women and children victimized by abortion. They are motivated by the countless stories like those of the “Silent No More” organization. Who is standing up for these women’s rights?

There are also men’s stories, which disprove Gene’s statement that women alone bear the consequences of abortion. Indeed, all of society bears the consequences.

Gene continues to accuse pro-lifers of discriminating against women. When one truly believes that every person deserves the right to life, it isn’t fair to say they are discriminating by trying to protect those lives. Granted, there are some very difficult situations, as in the case of a pregnant woman whose life is in danger. But there are clearly too many abortions being performed, and too many laws that favor the abortion industry instead of those who they serve and sometimes prey upon.

The current laws don’t just allow abortion, they encourage it.

Should my daughter, if she was 15 and pregnant, really be allowed to purchase an abortion pill without coming to me or her mom for advice?

Surely, no matter which side you are on, you can see that the current laws are allowing many to become victims of the abortion industry, not beneficiaries of it.
